Fresh Start is a nonprofit organization that serves youth ages 7 through 14 who live in impoverished and sometimes violent communities. As a Christian based association, youth are exposed to core values and principles that can help them meet the challenges they may face in life. Fresh Start seeks to provide relief and hope through venues that remove youth (through excursions) from mentally and emotionally challenging environments to locations where they can relax and experience the joys of childhood. Through the programs provided by Fresh Start children are offered spiritual and philosophical guidance, reflection and rest and relaxation in a structured format.

Fresh Start receives support from private donations and proceeds from the Western Edition – HP Journal neighborhood newspaper. The Western Edition – HP Journal is a neighborhood publication that seeks to bridge San Francisco communities and raise funding for the charitable work. The publication presents news and events that affect San Francisco neighborhoods. Additionally the publication seeks to highlight and promote the work of nonprofit public benefit organizations.

The Western Edition – HP Journal is owned and operated by Cedric B. Moore, a successful businessman. As a child, Moore faced many of the same challenges and obstacles experienced by youth participants at Fresh Start. Moore credits his personal success to adult mentors and to his exposure to venues that were outside of his troubled neighborhood. Moore also learned that a foundation steeped in core values, principles and morals can provide youth with decision-making skills. For Moore these core values and principles came from his exposure to Christian teaching. Determined to reach out and help children who are exposed to the stress of living in impoverished and violent neighborhoods, Moore founded Fresh Start.

Moore understood from his personal experience, that children need the opportunity to play in a safe environment. He also understood that core values could enhance a child’s ability to make the right decisions at critical moments when challenges are present. Fresh Start aims to provide youth with the opportunity to renew their spirit and to be exposed to a safe, comfortable and motivating environment. Once youth are exposed to this experience, Moore hopes that their lives will be positively impacted.
